The Aamir Khan starrer film Raakh is all set to be re-released this June… after 20 years! Believe it or not, this movie had released in 1989 when no one knew who Aamir Khan was. Not many people watched it; but those who did, loved it. Raakh was Aamir’s second film which went completely unnoticed. It’s was shot like a home video to create impact and that was probably a new technique of film making those days. But it was a dark film, and for a new actor to do something like that, is commendable truly. In fact, many of the cast and crew in this film were newcomers. Santosh Sivan, Pankaj Kapur, Supriya Pathak, Aamir Khan and the makers of this film made it reach great heights by winning 4 National awards! Take a look at the trailer of the film and decide whether you would like to watch it. I surely will. It releases on June 12th.

According to Aamir he doesn’t make films for awards he makes them for the audience. He feels heartened when both audiences in India and abroad enjoy his movies he doesn’t need an award to prove how popular and well loved his movies are. The actor who was recently in the news for his hit psychological thriller ‘Ghajini’ was also upbeat about the film’s effect on children. On being asked about his decision to make a violent film with a U/A certificate after wielding the megaphone himself on an issue-based subject, he said: ‘I think the censor board gave it due thought before coming out with U/A certification, which means parental guidance. ‘I feel any film which is U/A certified, parents ought to check it out before or wait till they see the review. I myself have done that. Junaid (Aamir’s son) is 15 and he has seen ‘Ghajini’ and Aira (daughter) is 10 and she has not. As parents, Rina (first wife) and I have taken that call,’ he explained. Aamir also negated the Western made Indian film controversy surrounding Danny Boyle’s Oscar-nominated underdog drama ‘Sllumdog Millionaire’. ‘I don’t see ‘Slumdog…’ as an Indian film. I think it is a film about India like ‘Gandhi’ (that) was made by Sir Richard Attenborough. Similarly, ‘Slumdog…’ is about India but it is not an Indian film. ‘I hope it does well in (the) Academy (awards). I don’t think it’s got to do anything with India or abroad. Filmmakers are creative people and they are storytellers. They are telling us a story. I don’t think ‘Slumdog…’ is making an attempt to show the underbelly of India or that may be its selling point,’ he explained. Talking about Bollywood stars making an entry into politics, Aamir said: ‘I don’t want to. I’ll support a political partly only when I seriously believe that this is in fact a party in which I have real hope and full confidence. Otherwise, I would never endorse a political party,’ he said. |

Madhu Mantena presented a solid-gold statue to Aamir designed specially to resemble Aamir’s Ghajini look at the party held to celebrate the film’s success earlier this week. He was very careful to include all 8 of Aamir’s abs. The statuette is pure gold and probably cost the producer close to Rs. 70-80 lakhs though he isn’t telling. “It has certain amount of other metal to make it malleable. Solid gold wouldn’t allow the identical Ghajini shape to be done in gold. But the idea was to create an Oscar-sized statue exclusively for Ghajini. Aamir knew he was getting a trophy. But he didn’t know it would be golden and with his Ghajini’s look. He was overwhelmed,” says Mantena. Director Murugadoss was also given a statue, though far less hefty and golden than Aamir’s, but of course including the 8-abs. |

This terrifying medley will unfold in a sequence in which Aamir is trying to woo Asin and prove yet again that no matter what the script may be,the Bollywood mantra of emasculating seemingly intense characters with inappropriate dancing must be french-kissed along the way. Aamir was not sure whether he would be able to pull off the six looks, but the envelope-pusher that he is, went ahead with it anyway. And for some unholy reason, this move is being celebrated by the crew like Jack Nicholson cooked them pasta on the sets. Ahmed Khan claims that it was very difficult for Aamir to wear things like low neck tees and low waist jeans and that’s why the song is so special. Right, sitting in that vanity van through makeover after makeover really brings out the rainbow of acting experience you have doesn’t it Buffy? |

The two have been friends ever since Aamir attended a couple of cricket matches and finally found someone he can talk to without craning his neck up. Sachin was so amazed by the Ghajini posters that he called Aamir and told him that it was too good to be true!! He thought it was digitally enhanced and went on to add that he’d only believe it if he saw it in person. Aamir, like every other buffed up 40 plus celebrity jumped at the chance to take off his shirt for anyone who asks and promised to do so when he gets back to Mumbai. From the looks of things, Sachin may well be the next celeb to hit to gym and pound iron like a homosexual in denial till he too swells to double his original size. |

If rumours are to be believed, she found him on all fours in his living room, staring into a full length mirror. When questioned about it, he mumbled something about his ‘inner lion’ and left it at that. It remains to be seen what happens with Asin and her chances in Bollywood. After Ghajini she has Salman Khan’s London Dreams lined up. |

We first saw signs of Aamir starting to toe the celebrity line when he started his blog. Then he went on to hard sell his nephew Imraan Khan before the launch of his debut Jaane Tu Ya Jaane Na. As if that wasn’t bad enough, he now wants to create a website so that he can keep in touch with media persons!! He wants journalists to go onto the site and upload their photos in order for him to remember where he met them and what he said. He claims this will allow him to offer some more personal input rather than bark out generic intense guy remarks like “My private life is my business” or “I don’t like to comment on other actors“. And who can forget such gems as, “She’s just a friend” or “I don’t even have the video facility on my phone“. Yes, times are a-changing. So what’s next Aamir? Bigg Boss perhaps? |

This is even bigger than July 4th when Aamir Khan and Harry Baweja released Jaane tu and Lovestory 2050 together. Here both the movies are based on the same topic: the Indian fashion industry. In one corner we have Madhur Bhandarkar backed by his somewhat successful films, Page 3 and Corporate. And in the other corner we have Sanjay Khandelwal whose family business is film distribution. While Madhur’s movie follows Priyanka Chopra’s (a small town girl) character’s rise to supermodel status, Sanjay Khandelwal’s movie traces the journey of a small town designer who comes to Mumbai to make it big. The cast of Fashion is relatively well known, Priyanka and Kangana are household names and Mugdha is an established model. The World of Fashion features newcomers Amrita Prakash, Priti Soni, Reema Ramchandani, Meghana Govil and one TV actor Ejaz Khan. It’s just stupid of Sanjay Khandelwal to assume he’ll come out of this alive. An established director with a well known attractive cast wins over a family in film distribution.

Karan Johar on the other hand has been directing a different kind of successful film. Kabhi Khushi Kabhi Gham, Kuch Kuch Hota Hai and Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna have not won international accolades but they have been crowd-pleasers back home. It could be Karan’s amazing directorial ability that made these movies what they are or it could just be Shah Rukh Khan. But now Karan is older, wiser and ready for his Oscar (or at least nomination). He says that venturing into new territory and tapping into the right tone is a challenge he looks forward to taking on. My Name is Khan, his latest venture, has SRK in the lead (obviously) playing Rizvan Khan. The protagonist in the film suffers from Aspergers Syndrome (high functioning Autism) and Shibani Bhatija, the screenplay writer of the film, has researched this disorder very accurately. Poor thing Shah Rukh is going to be portraying it, she needn’t have made such an effort. The message that runs right through the film is in strong support of humanity. Unlike dyslexia, a learning disorder related to reading and spelling which has no physical symptoms, people affected with Aspergers display physical clumsiness and an atypical use of language. Shouldn’t be too much of a challenge for Shah Rukh. So far, this does sound like a unique venture for K Jo and SRK. But they’ve forgotten a very crucial element which is what made Taare Zameen Par. A cute eight-year-old kid. |
